Vintage Panther Bracelet And Earrings - Duchess Of Windsor - Cartier Design - Gold Over Sterling - Ruby Eyes - Love Story - Valentine's Day - Clip Earrings
Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee', will forever be known as the woman a king gave up his throne for - and not just any throne - the throne of England!
In 1934, during her second marriage to Ernest Simpson, Wallis allegedly became the mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales, who had been groomed to take the throne of England since birth. Two years later, after Edward's accession as king, Wallis divorced her second husband in order to marry Edward, who had been forced to give up the throne because of his relationship with Wallis.
The duchess is famous for the saying, "You can never be too rich or too thin."
The original bracelet was made by Cartier and purchased for the Duchess in 1937. After the Duchess died, it was purchased by the Franklin Mint at the Sotheby's 1987 Geneva auction for $66,000. They then made a limited edition of the set for sale. At the time of issue the bracelet alone cost $500 without the earrings. It is in the size medium to large. The eyes in all pieces are genuine rubies and the pieces are covered in 22k gold. This came from the original owner who said it had never been worn. Signed "FM". The earrings are the clip-on style.
The original bracelet can be seen in Sotheby's book "The Jewels of the Duchess of Windsor". Their story:
